We are reissuing the renowned but hard-to-find series *The Medical Records of Sukokuro Yūsai* by the late author Emiko Imai—known for series such as *Tachiba Chaya Oriki* and *Terifuri-chō Jishiban Shoyaku Nichiroku*—with redesigned covers and commentary included in each volume!
Yūsai Sugishita runs the Yūyū-an dispensary in Akashi-chō, treating commoners living hand-to-mouth while also serving as the physician for the laborers’ camp on Ishikawajima. Though gruff and a heavy drinker, his medical skills are exceptionally expert, earning him the nickname “Dr. Sukokuro.” Through the stories of Yūsai—who, wishing for the physical and emotional recovery of the vulnerable, continues to rush about the streets of Edo even today—along with the veteran members of Yūyū-an, such as the midwife Otsu, and the patients who visit the clinic, this first volume in the reissue of this acclaimed series—which could be called Emiko Imai’s version of *Red Beard*—conveys not only the fragility of life and the harshness of existence but also the fundamental strength and warmth inherent in human beings. It is a series that cannot be read without shedding tears.
The commentary is by Atsuko Asano!
