How should we live through the long period of “aging” that precedes death?

In Tottori, a super-aging society, many children have moved away from the prefecture. Yet in the town, there is the daily life of elderly people—whether living alone, as a couple, or with siblings—who continue to live within their communities even as they approach 80, 90, or 100 years of age. They go to the supermarket, taking breaks along the way, and prepare their own meals. They spend a little time each day in their vegetable gardens and chat with neighbors.

There is the loneliness of being left alone after caring for a wife or husband with whom they’ve spent many years. As they grow older, there are more things they can no longer do, and they increasingly rely on others for care. Do they want to die already? Or no—do they still want to live?

This essay collection chronicles the daily lives and inner thoughts of the elderly as observed by the author, who has run the No-no-hana Clinic—a medical facility that also includes a hospice—in Tottori City for a quarter of a century.

The section “Elderly People Who Left a Lasting Impression,” written specifically about the people who left the deepest impression on the author among all those he has met,

is a must-read!
