In 1989, Tetsuya Chikushi left the Asahi Shimbun and became the anchor of a TBS news program.

"Tetsuya Chikushi NEWS23."

The first news program named after an individual who held "editorial authority" had begun.

The Aum Shinrikyo incident, the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, the September 11 attacks... “23” responded vividly to the tumultuous events of modern history, relativizing power and becoming a bastion that embodied freedom.

This is a memoir of the “23” era, written by an author who worked alongside Tetsuya Chikushi for over a decade, pouring his heart and soul into the project—and a challenge to our modern age, where freedom is lacking.
