The latest volume, No. 48, *Biting Into Red Bean Paste*, the grand finale of the wildly popular “Biting Into” series, is finally here!
Thirty-eight years after the 1988 release of *Biting Into Octopus*, the world of Shōji—which unfolded through the flagship Weekly Asahi serial “I Want to Eat This, I Want to Eat That” and later the Asahi Shimbun be serial “Not Yet! I Want to Eat This, I Want to Eat That”—finally comes to a close.
It’ll make you chuckle, and at times, you’ll be startled by the faint hints of sensuality…
Shōji-kun, who loved B-grade gourmet food and beer, chose “anko” as his final treat!
From grandfather to mother, mother to daughter, and daughter to child. To all you “Tokai-bayashi fans” spanning three generations, please enjoy this to the fullest!
<Anko seems to have a tendency to try to burrow into things.
Or rather than a tendency, is it a quirk? It burrows into manju.
It burrows into daifuku mochi. It burrows into monaka, and of course, into anpan as well.
In the case of dorayaki, is it more accurate to say it’s “wearing” it rather than “burrowing” into it?
It’s fine that it’s wearing it, but some seem to have gotten a little flustered and have their “hats” slightly askew.
For some reason, the “hat” on kintsuba is made of thin material. Why is it wearing something so thin?
It’s essentially see-through. Since see-through clothing was born from the scheme of people confident in their bodies deliberately wearing thin fabrics to show off their figures, we can assume the kintsuba’s scheme is the same. (Omitted)
Is there anyone in Japan who says, “I hate anko”?
All Japanese people love anko.
Japanese people hadn’t realized this until now, but once they did, they saw that “anko is the idol of the Japanese people.” (Omitted)
Japanese people and anko are inseparable.
Another characteristic of anko is that “it doesn’t go out into the world on its own.”
Daifuku mochi is eaten with mochi. Taiyaki is eaten with a sea bream. Dorayaki is eaten with dorayaki. It is always with someone.
The spirit of getting along well with everyone is the true essence of an idol.
However, there is one occasion when it does venture out into the world on its own.
That is when it is in an "Anmitsu." In an Anmitsu, it wears nothing. Alone, naked, completely naked.
The inside of an anmitsu bowl is a riot of colors. It’s a joy to find the naked red bean paste amidst the agar jelly, red beans, mochi, mandarin oranges, and cherries.
I scoop it up with a spoon and save it for last. A mouthful of red bean paste is delicious. It makes me happy. (From “Love Talk? Red Bean Paste Talk?”)
〈One of the weaknesses of monaka is how easily they get crushed.
The slightest thing can crush them. The slightest thing can crush them to a pulp.
Then there’s the misalignment.
The slightest thing causes the top and bottom halves to shift out of place.
You often see monaka where the top and bottom halves are misaligned.
Monaka are often sold in boxes containing several pieces, and in many cases, the lid covering them is slightly misaligned.
Normally, such misalignment would be corrected, but in the world of monaka, there is a prevailing attitude that “such misalignment doesn’t matter at all.”
If this were a wig, the misalignment would cause a huge uproar, but in the world of monaka, for some reason, it’s accepted.
This surely means they are “constantly treated carelessly” and “looked down upon.”
Why is the monaka shell looked down upon? (From “What’s the Difference Between Manju and Monaka?”)
Finally, the series finale—a grand conclusion! Thank you, Shoji-kun, for the past 38 years!
