Sometimes, things slip through the cracks of newspaper articles that report facts quickly, widely, and concisely. Yet even within those articles, there are stories I simply must share. This book compiles those stories.
Since arriving in Noto as a resident reporter for The Asahi Shimbun, many people have shared detailed accounts of that New Year's Day two years ago with me. Among their stories, I often heard about the night sky—strangely beautiful, I imagine, against the cold and the clear air, perhaps because the power outage had extinguished all the city lights.

"The winter Milky Way was almost sickeningly beautiful, to the point of being unpleasant."
"We hadn't eaten or drunk anything, and it was just so cold... But when I looked up at the sky, the midwinter stars were incredibly beautiful."
Amidst the ongoing large aftershocks, many people vividly described looking up at the starry sky while feeling crushed by despair and anxiety. The title of this book embodies the desire to record and preserve each of these individual experiences.
The journey of the "Recovery Council" formed by the residents of a small town of 50 households and 100 people at the tip of the Noto Peninsula. A supermarket and a radio station run by residents for residents, seeking a path to recovery in a town hit by both earthquake and torrential rain. A hub born from the disaster, fostering connections and building a future.
Through these five stories of people I met in Noto, I hope to convey the preciousness of the lives lived here.

　事実を早く広く端的に報じる新聞記事からは、ときにこぼれ落ちてしまうものがあります。でもその中にも、どうしても伝えたい話があります。この本は、それをまとめたものです。
　朝日新聞の駐在記者として能登に来てから、たくさんの方に、2年前の元日のことを詳細に聞かせてもらいました。その中で度々、夜の寒さと澄み切った空気、停電で街の明かりがすべて消えたこともあったのだろうと思いますが、場違いに美しい星空のことを耳にしました。

「冬銀河が嫌みなぐらい、それはもう気持ち悪いぐらいのきれいさだった」

　大きな余震が続く中、絶望と不安に押しつぶされそうになりながら見上げた星空のことを、多くの人が鮮明に語ってくれました。本書のタイトルには、そういった一つ一つの経験を書き留めて残したいという気持ちが込められています。
　能登半島の先端にある50世帯100人の小さなまちの住民たちによる「復興会議」の歩み。地震と豪雨で「二重被災」したまちで再起の道を探るスーパーと、住民による住民のためのラジオ局。震災をきっかけに生まれた交流と未来をつくる拠点――。
　能登に来て出会った人たちのこうした5つの物語を通して、ここで生きる人たちのいとなみの尊さが伝えられるといいと思っています。
