Master!　Can a living national treasure talk this much?
Unsuke Gokaido is the fourth living national treasure (holder of important intangible cultural assets) in the world of rakugo. The master, who has captivated audiences with a variety of comical and theatrical stories, will explain his own material with critic Yoshihiro Nagai as an interviewee. What is the point of the story, how did he devise it, and how did he feel about it in the performance? The program is also full of episodes from the first performance. He also shares his memories of his master, Kanehara-tei Umawo, his interactions with his students, and his theories on rakugo.

Kaendaiko
Nagai What do you think of Kaendaiko as a performer?
Unsuke: I think it is a matter of looking at the audience.
Nagai: Watching the audience?
Unsuke: If the audience is a bit stiff, I am afraid to perform this storytelling. So, for example, if I asked you to perform “Kaen Daiko” for ten days at a Yose theater, it would be very painful.
Nagai Why are you afraid?
Unsuke: It is not always popular. There is this fear that if you slip up somewhere (if you don't get a hit), you won't be able to recover and you will end up slipping to the end. That's why I'd like to refrain from performing “Kaen Daiko” at the end of a regular rakugo performance.
Nagai: So you just watch the audience and when you think, “Oh, maybe this will work today,” you put it on the stage?
Unsuke: That's how it is.
Shibahama
Nagai The Shisei and Shintcho line was rather light on “Shibahama,” wasn't it?
Unsuke: It's a complete drop-the-bills "Shibahama. The sage, “I hope it won't be a dream again,” is also in the style of the sage in a dropped conversation. What makes this sage difficult is the question, "Why can't it be a dream again? Usually, it is said, “Oh, it will be a dream again, lest my wife cheat me,” or something like that.
Nagai: Master's sageu is different from the others.
Unsuke: In my case, Katsugoro is at the peak of his happiness. I don't want this to become a dream, even though he is so fortunate to have such a wonderful thing, so I make it sound like "I don't want it to become a dream again.
Nagai: If Katsugoro's blissful thoughts are not properly enlivened, the dialogue will not come to life.
Unsuke That's right. That's why I set it up so that his wife is pregnant. To build up the element of happiness, having a child is quite significant. You have a child, you can drink, you get your money back. And then you hear the New Year's bell, and the year ends. I think it's nice that “having a child” is at the root of the climactic feeling of "Oh, congratulations! You have a child?　Then let's drink sake to celebrate.
Kajikazawa
Nagai “Kajikazawa” is a representative story of the Unsuke clan, filled with the ingenuity of Master Unsuke, and I hope that this form will be preserved. I don't think the Soryo disciples will do it (laughs).
Unsuke: I don't think Shirasake will do it (laughs). I wonder if Maishi will do it, too. I hear that Ryutama is doing it a lot these days. As a matter of fact, I have been asked to practice “Kaburazawa” quite a lot. Almost all of them are female comical storytellers (laughs).
Nagai Wow, is that so?
Unsuke: They want me to play Okuma. She wants to play a bad girl like that. I think he has already taught four or five people, all girls. There may be no men.

「師匠！　人間国宝がここまで喋っていいんですか!?」
落語界4人目の人間国宝（重要無形文化財保持者）となった五街道雲助。滑稽噺から芝居噺まで、多彩な高座で客席を魅了する師匠が、評論家・長井好弘氏を聞き手に、持ちネタを解説します。その噺のポイントはどこか、どんな工夫を行い、本番でどう感じたか。初出しのエピソードも満載。師匠・金原亭馬生の思い出、弟子たちとの交流、そして落語論も。

本文の一部をご紹介します。
●火焔太鼓（かえんだいこ）
長井　雲助師匠は演者として『火焔太鼓』についてどう思っていますか？　
雲助　やっぱり、お客を見るというか。
長井　観客を見る？
雲助　ちょっと硬いお客さんの時だと、この噺をやるのは怖いです。だから、たとえば寄席で十日間、ずっと『火焔太鼓』でトリを取ってくれと言ったら、かなり苦痛でしょうね。
長井　どうして怖いのですか？
雲助　必ずウケるとは限らない。どこかで一つ滑ったら（ウケなかったら）、回復できずに最後までスベって終わるような、そういう怖さがあるんですよ。だから、普通の落語会のトリで、『火焔太鼓』のネタ出しなんてェのも、ちょっと遠慮したい。
長井　お客さんの様子を見て、「あ、これだったら今日は大丈夫かな」と思ったら高座にかける、という感じですか？
雲助　そういうことです。

●芝浜（しばはま）
長井　志ん生、志ん朝ラインは割と軽めの『芝浜』でしたね。
雲助　もう完全に落とし噺の『芝浜』ですよ。サゲの「また夢になるといけねえ」っていうのも落とし噺のサゲの言い方をしてますね。このサゲが難しいのは、「なぜ夢になるといけないのか」ということなんです。普通は「あ、また夢になって、かみさんに騙されるといけないから」とか、だいたいそんな感覚でのサゲの言い方ですよね。
長井　師匠のサゲは一味違いますね。
雲助　あたしのは、とにかく勝五郎が幸福の絶頂にある。せっかくこんなありがたいことがあるのに、これが夢になっちゃあいけないから、「また夢になるといけねえや」という落とし方にするんですね。
長井　勝五郎の至福の思いをちゃんと盛り上げておかないと、その台詞が生きてこないという。
雲助　そうですね。だから、あたしは女房が身籠っているという設定にしています。幸せの要素を積み重ねるには、子供ができたというのはかなり大きい。子供ができる、お酒が飲める、お金が戻ってくる。それで、除夜の鐘が聞こえて、年が明ける。「ああ、おめでとうよ」という絶頂感の根底に「子供ができる」というのがあるというのがいいなあという気がします。「子供ができた？　じゃあ祝いに酒を」という口実もできるしね。

●鰍沢（かじかざわ）
長井　『鰍沢』は雲助師匠の工夫がいっぱい詰まった、いわば雲助一門の代表的な噺ですから、この形を何とか残してほしいなと思います。総領弟子はやらないと思うけど（笑）。
雲助　白酒はやらないでしょうね（笑）。馬石も、やらねえかな。最近は、龍玉がよくやっているらしいけど。実は『鰍沢』って、ずいぶん稽古頼まれてるんですよ。それが、ほとんど女性の噺家なの（笑）。
長井　へえー、そうなんですか。
雲助　お熊をやりたいというんです。ああいう悪女みたいなのをやってみたいって。もう、四、五人教えてるんじゃないかな、女の子ばっかり。男はいないかもしれない（笑）。
長井　雲助師匠は、「稽古をつけてください」っていう人には方は皆さん、教えてます？
雲助　もちろんです。
長井　「まだ早い」とか、そんなことは思わないですか？
雲助　うーん、思ったとしても、一応稽古はします。まず無理だろうなと思うときもあるけど、「稽古してくれ」と言われりゃ、断りませんよ。
